Promoting STEAM education is a key global educational development trends. It aims to equip students to respond to the transformations and challenges brought about by rapid advances in the economy, science, and technology. In this era of accelerating technological change, information technology literacy and algorithmic thinking have become core competencies. Participants in the Olympiad in Informatics (OI), distinguished by their outstanding mathematical thinking and computational science proficiency, are increasingly sought after by leading global technology companies.

On the international stage, the pinnacle of OI competitions is the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). Since 1997, the Hong Kong Olympiad in Informatics (HKOI) has served as the preliminary selection for Hong Kong’s IOI team, undertaking the important mission of nurturing secondary students’ algorithmic problem-solving abilities and programming skills. In recent years, our school has actively promoted related training initiatives, achieving excellent results in various competitions. In 2021, we formally established an OI school team to provide systematic training for students with potential.

However, the education sector has increasingly recognised that OI training need not wait until secondary school to begin. As early as 2017, the Hong Kong Association for Computer Education and the Hong Kong Olympiad in Informatics Committee launched the Hong Kong Primary Schools Olympiad in Informatics (HKPSOI), providing valuable opportunities for upper primary students to develop computational thinking and logical reasoning skills. Drawing on our years of experience in training OI participants, we firmly believe that foundational concepts in computer science and problem-solving techniques can indeed be established at the primary level. This early cultivation can inspire students’ potential, foster higher-order thinking skills, and lay a solid foundation for more advanced OI training in secondary school.

In the spirit of HKPSOI, our school will organise the inaugural TWGSS Junior OI Challenge this academic year. The competition aims to provide an additional high-quality platform for upper primary students with a strong interest in computational science. We hope to identify and nurture promising young talents at an early stage, strengthen their foundations, and cultivate a new generation of outstanding individuals in the field of informatics for Hong Kong.

The First TWGSS Junior OI Challenge will be held on the morning of 23 May 2026 (Saturday) in our school hall. The competition format will largely follow the HKPSOI Final Event. Students will complete designated problem-solving tasks within one hour using iPads and the Blockly block-based programming language. The language is designed to user-friendly, making it suitable for primary students while unlocking their creativity and logical reasoning.

We sincerely invite your school to nominate students to participate in this event. Your support would be most appreciated.
